Safety Glass
Laminated and Tempered
Safety glass refers to any glass that when broken does not pose a safety hazard. It wasn’t until 1972 that building codes were revised to mandate safety glazing in doors and other high traffic areas. Until then numerous injuries including loss of limbs and even death were attributed to broken glass that allowed large sharp shards of glass. Current building codes require safety glazing in all doors, sidelites, walking surfaces, bathroom tub and shower enclosures, patio furniture and other applications to ensure the safety of any person that may come into contact with glass in these potentially dangerous traffic areas. The two most common types of safety glass are Laminated and Tempered glass.
Laminated glass like that in your car windshield is manufactured by laminating 2 pieces of glass together with a PVB (polyvinyl butyral) inner-layer. When broken, the glass cracks but stays together so there is no danger of lacerations. Laminated glass also provides a level of security when used in storefronts or other secure locations as it remains in place even when badly broken due to the strong PVB inner-layer.
Tempered glass is manufactured by heating glass to approximately 1200º Fahrenheit followed by rapid cooling of the outer surfaces. This rapid cooling causes a tension between the outer and inner surfaces. This tension increases the strength of the glass approximately six fold. When the glass is broken, this tension causes it to shatter into small blunt granules rather than large sharp shards.
Plexiglas and Lexan
Plexiglas® and Lexan® are both trade names for acrylic and polycarbonate sheet respectively. Each has unique properties that lend them to specific uses and both are considered safety glass when used in glazing applications.
Available in thicknesses from 1/16″ up to 1″ and sheets sizes up to 10′ x 12′ in some colors, both Plexiglas® and Lexan® can be custom cut to any size and shape and can be drilled for various fastening options. In 1/16″ and 1/8″ thicknesses sheets can be bent, allowing for curved applications that only tempered glass could normally be used. Boats, RV’s, Patio tables and other outdoor applications benefit from the flexibility and safety that Plexiglas® and Lexan® have to offer. A wide range of colors are available as well as many different textures.
Insulated Glass
Insulated glass is also commonly called dual pane glass and most new homes are constructed using insulated glass in the window and door applications. Insulated glass or dual pane glass is also referred to as I.G.’s or units. These units are constructed of two pieces of glass joined together by a perimeter spacer and sealed to create an airtight component. The benefit of insulated or dual pane glass is that it creates a “dead air space” between the two pieces of glass creating substantial insulating properties. Windows utilizing insulated glass are much more energy efficient. Usually, the bigger the space between the two pieces of glass, the better the insulating qualities are. Another excellent benefit of insulated glass is that it provides excellent soundproofing. Your home or office will have a much quieter environment with the use of insulated or dual pane windows.
The Lincoln Glass professionals are knowledgeable and experienced in all applications of insulated glass. We can show you many different products on the market for use in your home or business to fill your specific needs. Low-E glass, internal grids, tinted, obscure and high performance glass are additional options that can be built into your window openings.
Our knowledgeable technicians can come to your home or office to determine which product would be best for your application and once selected your windows will be quickly and professionally installed in your home or office. When the job is done, you’ll be able to realize the substantial energy savings and as well as the quieter environment that only insulated glass can provide.

Low-E Insulating Glass
The preferred choice of glass for windows and doors in the hot Southern climate is Low-E Insulating Glass. Low-E (low-emissivity) is a term used for a surface that radiates, or emits, low levels of radiant energy. Low-E glass is manufactured by applying specific metallic coatings (silver, zinc or tin) to the surface of glass to reflect heat. There are two types of Low-E glass: hard coat and soft coat.
Hard coat Low-E glass is manufactured by pouring a thin layer of molten tin onto a sheet of glass while the glass is still slightly molten. The tin actually becomes “welded” to the glass. This process makes it difficult or “hard” to scratch or remove the tin. Often this glass has a blue’ish tint to it.
Soft coat Low-E glass, on the other hand, involves the application of silver, zinc or tin to glass in a vacuum. The glass enters a vacuum chamber filled with an inert gas which is electrically charged. The electricity combined with the vacuum allows molecules of metal to sputter onto the glass. The coating is fairly delicate or “soft”.
When either type is added to the inner surface of a dual pane or insulated glass unit, it’s referred to as a Low-E Insulated unit. The two types of Low-E glass have different performance characteristics. The soft coat process has the ability to reflect more heat back to the source.
Plate Glass
Also referred to as sheet glass or float glass, plate glass is manufactured in a float system where molten glass is floated on a bed of molten tin where it is drawn out and rolled to the desired thickness in a continuous sheet. Thicknesses can range from 1/16″ to over 1″ thick in sheets as large as 120″ high by 180″ wide. Float glass in thicknesses of 3/8″ and above are considered Heavy Plate.
Common uses of heavy plate glass are table tops, shelving and decorative space dividers. When heat tempered it can be used for interior walls, shower enclosures, mall storefronts and commercial doors.
Much of the appeal of heavy plate glass in decorator items is the massive look and the wide range of edge work that is possible. When used for walls in confined spaces like offices or inside malls, heavy plate glass can provide defined spaces with security while maintaining an open, light filled area.
